Lessons From Job

Intro

Andrew will be reading from the NASB. I will be reading from the ESV.

A LOT of Bible reading - NO APOLOGIES!!

We may or may not go the full hour. :)

The Faith of Abraham

Hebrews 11:8-19 NKJV

8 By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. 9 By faith he went to live in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise. 10 For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God. 11 By faith Sarah herself received power to conceive, even when she was past the age, since she considered him faithful who had promised. 12 Therefore from one man, and him as good as dead, were born descendants as many as the stars of heaven and as many as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore.

13 These all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth. 14 For people who speak thus make it clear that they are seeking a homeland.15 If they had been thinking of that land from which they had gone out, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city.

17 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was in the act of offering up his only son, 18 of whom it was said, “Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.” 19 He considered that God was able even to raise him from the dead, from which, figuratively speaking, he did receive him back.

Job An Encouragement to Abraham?

Andrew, summarize the Book of Job…

Andrew, when was Job written? Under the Mosaic law? In the time of the patriarchs? Prior to Abraham? It doesn’t reference the Mosaic law, or the nation of Israel, or Abraham and his descendants. Could Job have been a contemporary to Abraham? Was it written during Israel’s time in Egypt during their 400 years of bondage?

There is reason to believe Job was the earliest book of the Bible written. It uses a lot of different words and phrases that don’t appear elsewhere in the Bible and challenges scholars. It might predate Moses’ writing of the first 5 books of the Bible.

Is it possible that Abraham, the man of faith, was aware of Job and encouraged by his example? Food for thought :)

The Tale of Job

Points to highlight in reading:

  1. How would you like to have a spouse like Job’s? Remember she didn’t suffer physically like Job, but she also lost all her family and possessions.

  2. Will we not accept the bad with the good from God - We’re Done!

  3. How low does Job go?

  4. Elihu might help set the stage, and certainly does for God’s entrance.

What is the lesson? What was God’s answer to Job’s suffering?

I AM GOD AND WHO ARE YOU?

Maybe when we are challenged, even in our faith, we need to trust in God?

Having trouble understanding a part of the Bible? Do you trust the One Who wrote it?

Struggling with Evolution? Want to meet the God that can some day give you all the answers you need?

Take comfort, and remember God is GOD!
