God is building three things: a house, a family and a kingdom. So far, we’ve seen him build the earth as his house and then start a family from Adam & Eve. From the there, the family tree led us to Abraham and his son, Isaac. This month, we’ll continue this story as God builds up a family thru Isaac’s son Jacob (week 1), then saves that family by Joseph’s hand (weeks 2-3), and then transforms that family into a kingdom during their slavery in Egypt (week 4). We’ll also begin to see the kingdom of God overthrowing the kingdoms of idols—a motif that will repeat often as we go forward. Be sure to keep your eyes on the men to whom God makes promises—they’re names that you’ll see again & again as God continues building through the rest of the Bible! |

The petty deception which
characterized Jacob’s life and the hatred shown by his sons
toward their brother Joseph causes many to ask, “Why are
these the characters that God uses to build his kingdom, his
family, and his house? Shouldn’t they be much more righteous
than what we’re seeing?” Two considerations will help with
these questions: 1) These stories were not written as models for emulation; they were written to tell the story of things built by God’s hand. 2) These imperfect characters demonstrate the fact that God’s purposes have always been carried out by imperfect people. Just like us. |
